There has been a lot of speculation regarding the prospective future moves of United striker, Robin van Persie and this has created a buzz in the betting circles.
Bookmakers have now suspended betting on the player’s transfer to Fenerbahce after they took a large number of wagers at short odds.
The odds on the Dutch player joining the Turkish side were as low as 1/10. In fact, there is a great deal of confusion regarding the 31-year-old Netherland player’s plans for the immediate future.
What’s clear is that he is moving, which is why bookies stopped taking bets in a bid to protect themselves from having to pay out a lot of money.
All along there were indications that van Persie was planning to join Turkish side Besiktas, but that his family considerations, he has a wife and two kids, would not permit him to make the move.
Persie’s wife was reportedly not at all happy to move to Turkey and the talks stalled on that point.
This is why the sudden talk about the move to Fenerbahce, in the same city Mrs. Van Persie didn’t want to move to, is extremely surprising.
The reports about the prospective move have come from a very reliable source and they cannot be discounted.
Persie’s agent, Kees Voos is believed to have spent the past couple of days in Istanbul ironing out the details of the move and putting a good contract in place now that he has been given the go ahead by Persie’s wife.
It’s really surprising that two stories with entirely different story lines come out at around the same time.
The strongest rumour doing the rounds is that the player has already signed a deal for four years with the amount being undisclosed as of now.
There is no official word on Persie’s plans for the future and it is very likely that some part of the story was planted only to create a certain amount of publicity!
And it certainly has worked!
In any case, bookies have been offering good odds on van Persie quitting Manchester United ever since the transfer window was opened.
It is only his destination that has been finalised this far. Other clubs that have shown interest in the player include Galatasaray and Real Madrid.
Manchester United may actually be quite happy to let Van Persie go since the last time he put on a spectacular performance was the Premier League season of 2012-13.
He has not been getting a lot of opportunities to play in the first team and he needs to move in order to remedy the situation before the European Championships get underway.
Fenerbahce will give van Persie the experience he needs to get ahead in his career.
In fact, the club did very well in the previous season of the Turkish Super Lig and it will take part in the Champions League play-offs.
It remains to be seen whether the change is able to jump start van Persie’s flagging career before it becomes extremely late.
