Sic bo, also known as big and small, is an ancient Chinese game of chance. Introduced to the West in the early 20th century, it has gained widespread popularity ever since and can be found in most American casinos nowadays.
Sic bo is played using three dice and is relatively easy. The player simply bets on the outcomes that might roll on the dice. The chips are placed on the possible number combinations and the dice is rolled. The payout depends on how high the odds of the selected number combination are.
There are no formulas or complex patterns that need to be learned. You just need to have an understanding of the types of bet you can place in Sic bo.
Types of Bets
There are various types of bets that can be placed on the possible outcomes. The most commonly placed bets are explained here.
“One of a Kind”
The most basic bet is the “One of a Kind”, where a player bets on a specific number showing up on any of the three dice. As this bet has the highest chance of winning, it has the lowest payout at just 1:1. However, if that number shows up on the second and third dice as well, the winning payout is 2:1 and 3:1 respectively.
Adding to the previous bet, you can also choose to bet on two different numbers rolling onto the dice. The numbers cannot be the same. The payoff for this bet is 5:1.
“Big” or “Small” Bets
You can also wager on the total sum of numbers from the resulting dice. There are two options here. You can either choose a specific number that will roll on to the dice or you can choose from a range of numbers from “Big” to “Small”. In the former, the payout depends on how high the chances of rolling a total to that number are, ranging from 62:1 for 4 or 17 to 6:1 for 10 or 11.
In “Big” bets, you bet on a range of numbers from 11 to 17 (inclusive), and win if the total is between that range. Likewise, in “Small” bets, you bet on the lower range of numbers from 4 to 10 (inclusive). The pay out for both these bets is 1:1.
“Two of a Kind”
In “Two of a Kind”, the player chooses a specific number that has to repeat on at least 2 of the 3 dices in order to win. Example: 4,4,1 or 1,2,2. The resulting payout for such bets is 8:1.
“Three of a Kind” and “Any Three of a Kind”
The “Three of a Kind” bet has the highest payout in the game, as it has the least probability of resulting at just 0.5%. The player chooses a specific number from 1 to 6 that must appear on all three dice, example 1,1,1 or 2,2,2. The resulting payout is the highest, at 150:1.
In “Any Three of a Kind”, the player doesn’t choose a specific number, but bets that any number from 1 to 6 would repeat on all of the three dice. Therefore, the chances of winning are 6 more times than “Three of a Kind”. The resulting payout is valued at 24:1.
Now that you know the basics of Sic bo, you can start playing this ancient game of chance and test your luck.
