Global gaming Group Flutter Entertainment has announced an expansion of its existing arrangement with online gaming technology firm Scientific Games as part of its continuing expansion into the growing US sports betting market.
The deal will see Scientific provide the Flutter-owned sports betting and fantasy sports operator FanDuel with its online software and other technology. This will be used to support FanDuel’s mobile and online betting platform focused on the US sector.
The expansion of the arrangement, which also includes igaming online content, will involve Scientific forming a partnership with FanDuel in a number of regulated markets throughout the US.
The relationship between Flutter and Scientific is a long-standing one. Industry-leading sports betting platform OpenBet, which is now part of Scientific’s online division SG Digital, has been central to the sports betting model used by Flutter in the European sector for over ten years.
FanDuel was originally one of the US’s leading daily fantasy sports providers, and while it continues to offer fantasy sports contests, it has been focused on expanding into the newly regulated sports betting industry in the US. These efforts have been strengthened by becoming part of the Flutter Group, together with Betfair, Paddy Power and Sportsbet.
The operator has been particularly prominent in New Jersey, one of the leading players in the US sports betting sector. According to figures released for December last year, the online betting sites that FanDuel operators in New Jersey, licensed through the Meadowlands casino, generated revenue of more than $12 million. Two months earlier, sports betting in New Jersey generated an impressive $38 million and that figure could be set to grow over the coming months.
The deal also represents welcome good news for Flutter at the end of a week in which the UK competition regulator, the CMA, announced that it would be investigating the proposed merger between Flutter and fellow gaming giant Stars Group.
